Welcome to Richmond Hill

Albon P. Man - Founder of Richmond Hill

Noteworthy People of Richmond Hill, NY

Albon P. Man was a businessman and real estate developer who was instrumental in the development of the Queens, New York neighborhood of Richmond Hill. He was born in 1841 in the town of Romulus, New York, and moved to New York City in the late 1800s. In the early 1890s, he began purchasing land in the area that is now Richmond Hill, and he quickly began developing it into a residential community.

Man promoted his development as a "suburban" community, with larger homes on larger lots than were typically found in New York City at the time. He also sought to attract middle-class residents by offering relatively affordable prices, and by building a number of amenities, such as a hotel, a theater, and a trolley line, to serve the community.

Man's efforts were successful, and by the turn of the 20th century, Richmond Hill had become a popular and thriving community. Albon P. Man died in 1911 but his legacy lives on the community he helped build.
