Flagpole Dedication &
Celebration 2003
“On
behalf of the citizens of this community we present this new flagpole to
the Richmond Hill Library to be the new rallying point of our people in
days that are bright and in days when clouds are gathering”
Jacob Riis - 1910
In
1910 Jacob Riis, a long time Richmond Hill
resident and America’s first Photojournalist, created a movement among
the people to erect a flagpole in front of the 1905 Richmond Hill Library.
Amid great fanfare the American flag was raised. A number of years later
when Lefferts Blvd was widened the flagpole
was taken down and never replaced. The Richmond Hill Historical Society
made it their special goal, in 2003, to place a new flagpole in front of
the library and recreate the original 1910 ceremony to rally the people
of Richmond Hill once again. - The Richmond Hill Historical Society
